Word was unable to use the template...

A "Word was unable to use the template" message can be shown by JCS when attempting to create a new document via the Document Register or when creating a new Profile Report. This will prevent the new document from being created.

The reason for the error may be given as:

  • "Application-defined or object-defined error"
  • "A file error has occurred"


This problem will occur whenever a new document is created from a template file on a network drive. i.e. if the JCS StandardDocumentsPath or ProfileReportsPath is set to a location on a network drive (which it normally is, so user's can share templates).

Solution

  1. Outside of JCS, open Word.
  2. Open a new blank document
  3. Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View
  4. Untick the option that says "Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet"
  5. Click OK and close Word
  6. Close and restart JCS

Note, adding the location of the template files to Word's "Trusted Locations" does not fix this issue.
